Of course if none of this works, I have no idea, and you will have to provide a minimal reproducible example if you want help. At the moment, my favourite LaTeX editor and renderer, the pre-release Compositor, is not ready to tackle such advanced stylesheets, but the output from my example document renders beautifully in TeXShop, as shown. This does deserve further investigation, but maybe you should consider compiling with LuaLaTeX?

Is microtype the likely culprit? I don't set any parameters in that in fact, I'm sure I'm using it because the template I initially copied used it. I've made sure that everything is updated, but that makes no difference. Just one drive showing and thats the main OS. I also tried holding the option key and when the drive section shows, there in not 'Recovery Mode' drive to choose from. Ive tried and tried to get recovery mode to work in High Sierra and it just wont work.
This has happened on four machines over about eight years of different versions of MacOS, so it's surely user error. Recovery mode not working in High Sierra 10.13.6.

Running the end results through any version of Acrobat (both 9 and the most recent), however, just produces empty boxes instead of characters no matter what font I use. To save as a PDF, I Print>Print to PDF using the MacOS dialog because that's the only way I've been able to figure out to do that. I use the fontspec package for font management, the microtype package, and PDFtex to typeset. On a Mac, I've created XeLaTex documents in TexShop for some time, and I've never been able to produce a PDF from which Acrobat can recognize text.
